Phishing is a common term in the technology world. Every day, different organizations from around the world encounter phishing emails that are actually attempting to steal information in exchange for money. But, did you know there are multiple phishing tactics that hackers use?
We’re here to explain the three different phishing tactics that are used for malicious attacks: Phishing, Spear Phishing, and Whaling.
Phishing: Phishing involves using a broad-stroke approach that sends bulk emails to massive lists of unsuspecting contacts. While phishing doesn’t aim for a specific target, it baits the recipient into clicking a link within the email. The goal of this tactic is for the user to reveal financial information, system credentials, or other sensitive data.
Spear Phishing: This malicious tactic is more specific to what user they want to target. Spear phishing is targeted and personalized to a specific individual, group, or organization. Hackers send emails to a specific and well-researched target while acting as a trusted sender. The goal is to either infect devices with malware or convince their victims to hand over information or money.
Whaling: Whaling or Whale Phishing is a highly focused phishing attack that targets high-profile individuals like politicians, celebrities, and corporate executives. As with all phishing attacks, the goal is to steal sensitive information or even encourage victims to authorize high-value wire transfers to the attacker.
Being able to correctly identify phishing attacks is key to keeping your computer and your data safe. Knowing how to avoid these malicious attacks will help decrease the risk of having sensitive information stolen.
