Data is the most valuable asset a business can have, and it’s essential to take measures to protect your data from accidental or malicious deletion. One of the best ways to protect your data is by creating backups, and Amazon Web Services (AWS) provides a comprehensive suite of services to make backups a breeze. In this blog post, we cover how to create and store backups in AWS S3 (aka Simple Storage Service) buckets.
What are AWS S3 and S3 buckets?
Amazon S3 is a scalable, secure, and highly available object storage service that can be used to store and retrieve any amount of data. S3 buckets are the primary storage mechanism for S3 objects, and they can be used to store your backups. A new S3 bucket can be created using the AWS Management Console or the AWS CLI and then configured to store your backups in the bucket.
To create a backup of your AWS resource, you must first create a backup plan using AWS Backup. Backup plans define when and how frequently backups are taken, how long the backups are retained, and the destination for the backups.
With a backup plan in place, you must then associate the resources you want to have backed up. When you associate a resource with a backup plan, AWS Backup automatically creates backup schedules and backup rules for the resource. You can then create a backup vault and specify which S3 bucket(s) to use as the destination for your backups. Doing so ensures that your data is protected and can be easily restored in case of accidental or malicious deletion or loss.
